Bats, caves, geology and another roadside repair! It can only mean one thing: we’re surveying Kashkadarya. We decided to do some geotectonic reconnaissance before closing the trench in Kiik Kamar Cave. Why? Because our fieldwork in Uzbekistan goes far beyond excavation. Alongside our work in the caves, the INASIA team conducts surveys across the Kashkadarya region, searching for new archaeological sites and investigating the geological and tectonic context of the caves and surrounding landscape.
Survey means spending long days moving through the mountains, visiting caves and rock shelters, documenting their geological setting and assessing their archaeological potential. It also means that you never quite know what the day will bring. This time, one of the caves was already occupied by a colony of bats. They were not happy to see us. And our car decided to break down once again.
