ERC Post-doc PALEO
This is a half-time position for a post-doctoral researcher (R2) to be employed at the University of Warsaw for 48 months starting on 1st March 2026.
Approx. annual salary: 95 454 PLN gross (including an annual bonus and seniority allowance) and a social benefits package.
Key responsibilities:
- participation in excavation and surface surveys at high-mountain cave sites;
- sorting of archaeological artefacts after flotation/sieving and selecting small bone material;
- cataloguing of the collected bone material;
- conducting taxonomic, morphometric, and taphonomic analyses of animal remains obtained during excavations;
- performing zooarchaeological analyses of animal remains and interpreting them in the context of human settlement;
- conducting paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on analysed animal remains;
- collecting samples and coordinating specialised analyses, including dating, isotopic analyses, ZoomS, traceological studies and other analyses performed on animal remains;
- interpreting obtained results in the context of interdisciplinary analyses;
- preparing publications and presenting results;
- collaborating with other team members.
Eligibility criteria:
- compliance with the requirements specified in Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws 2024, item 1571, consolidated text);
- a Master’s degree in archaeology, biology or geology;
- a PhD in the discipline of archaeology, biological sciences, Earth and related environmental sciences or other related fields;
- experience in taxonomic, morphometric and taphonomic analyses of animal remains from Pleistocene sites, including cave sites in Central Asia or the Middle East;
- knowledge of zooarchaeological methods and the ability to interpret results in the context of human settlement and activity;
- experience in conducting paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on animal remains;
- ability to collect and prepare samples, as well as experience in coordinating specialized analyses of organic remains (radiocarbon dating, isotopic analyses, traceological studies, and others);
- experience in working with large collections of fossil mammal remain and conducting their comparative studies, with particular emphasis on cataloguing and conservation;
- knowledge of statistical methods and experience in applying them to the analysis of bone materials;
- ability to work within an interdisciplinary team, including collaboration with archaeologists, geologists, and other specialists;
- ability to independently coordinate research tasks;
- willingness to participate in high-mountain field expeditions in Uzbekistan;
- advanced written and spoken English;
- documented publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
