This is a 3/4-time position for a doctoral candidate (R1) to be employed at the University of Warsaw for 42 months starting on 1st March 2026.
Approx. annual salary: 95 850 PLN gross (including an annual bonus and seniority allowance) and a social benefits package.
Key responsibilities:
- participation in excavations and surface surveys at high-mountain cave sites;
- mapping of stone raw materials in the studied region of the western Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai;
- creation of a reference database of available stone raw materials in the region;
- raw material analysis (using selected analytical methods) of stone artefacts, including quartzite, found at the studied sites;
- provenance analysis of stone materials;
- interpretation of the obtained results in the context of raw material procurement in the region;
- preparation of publications and presentation of results;
- cooperation with other team members.
Eligibility criteria:
- compliance with the requirements specified in Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws 2024, item 1571, consolidated text);
- a granted PhD student status at UW Doctoral School of Humanities, or UW Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences, or UW Interdisciplinary Doctoral School, or admission for research projects within exceeding the limits procedure starting from spring semester 2025/2026 at the latest;
- a Master’s degree in archaeology, geography, geology or a related discipline;
- ability to read and analyse geological maps;
- knowledge of geological methods such as geological mapping, rock identification, microscopy of rocks or minerals; in addition, basic knowledge of the geological structure of Central Asia;
- experience in conducting field research aimed at identifying rock outcrops;
- experience in applying petrographic methods of raw material analysis, e.g., geochemical analysis, microscopic thin-section analysis;
- willingness to participate in high-mountain fieldwork in Uzbekistan;
- advanced written and spoken English;
- teamwork skills;
- documented publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
